‘The Lord turned to him and said, “Go in the strength you have and save Israel out of Midian’s hand. Am I not sending you?” “Pardon me, my lord,” Gideon replied, “but how can I save Israel? My clan is the weakest in Manasseh, and I am the least in my family.”’Judges 6:14-15 NIV
I remember when I was in University, completing my Masters, I was looking for an apprenticeship. Indeed, by being an apprentice in a company, they would pay my school fees and pay me a monthly salary. An employee of a multinational company came into my University and each of my classmates wanted to get the apprenticeship position. When the recruiter visited us, she explained that she wanted someone who had a driving license because the job required some travel to the countryside which was only accessible by car.
Unfortunately, I did not have my driving license yet, so I was quite hesitant to apply for the position. After a discussion with my parents, we concluded that I should apply because after all, it cost me nothing to send my application. Immediately after I sent my application, I got shortlisted with 4 others applicants. One of the other applicants was quite confident because he previously did an apprenticeship in the same company during his BsC. He boldly told me that he would get the job because he could drive and previously worked there. He even advised me to apply elsewhere in order to secure a position. Therefore, I was distressed and scared. After the interview I remember saying to my parents that I will not get the job. But I was still waiting for the final choice. The recruiter finally chose ME over everyone else, regardless of my lack of driving licence. 1 month later, I passed my driving test and before the beginning of the job I had my car. And even when I did not trust myself, he believed in me more than anything and guided me to success and the pursuit of my destiny.
Finally, for the record, I had previously applied to another company. This company had also chosen me for to take the position of apprentices. I finally decided to go for the position in the multinational company and referred one of my classmate, so that she has the position in the other company.
Fear is a feeling that can prevent you from exploring the capacity that God has put inside of you. Fear can make you miss not only opportunities but also destiny.
Have you ever had the feeling that the mountain is too high to climb ? Have you ever had the feeling that you do not have the capacity to succeed, whereas God wants you to try. He doesn’t just want you to try, but he wants you to try knowing that you will succeed.
God has equipped us with many stories in the Bible reflecting how his people overcame FEAR.
The story of Gideon is one of them.
Likewise, while the people of Israel had turned their backs to God for many years and started to worship Baal, they were under the oppression of the Midianites who were stealing all their food. God decided to deliver the Israelites through Gideon. But although God believed in Gideon and knew that he could deliver his people and bring the victory to the Israelites, Gideon himself doubted. He was fearful and only saw himself with the eyes of a young man coming from the weakest family of Manasseh’s tribe and being the least of his family.
‘So he said to Him, “O my Lord, how can I save Israel? Indeed my clan is the weakest in Manasseh, and I am the least in my father’s house.”’ Judges 6 :15 NKJV
